Underground Nests

These are some of the most common (and most problematic) wasp nests.

Yellow jackets often build their nests underground, using abandoned rodent burrows or creating their own tunnels. From the surface, the nest may look like a small hole in the ground with frequent wasp activity flying in and out.

These nests are easy to miss until they’re disturbed, which is when yellow jackets can become aggressive. Because they are highly protective and can sting multiple times, underground nests are considered among the highest-risk infestations for homeowners.

Hanging Paper Nests

Hornet nests are large, enclosed structures that hang from trees, rooflines, or other elevated areas.

They are typically gray or tan and have a papery texture. These nests can grow quite large over time and are often visible from a distance.

Hornets are generally not aggressive unless their nest is threatened, but they will defend it if disturbed. Due to the colony's size and protective behavior, these nests should always be handled with care.

Open Umbrella Nests

Paper wasps build smaller, open-faced nests that resemble an upside-down umbrella.

These nests are usually found under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, and other sheltered areas around the home. The comb structure is visible from below, with individual cells exposed.

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellow jackets but will defend their nest if approached too closely. Because their nests are often built near entryways or high-traffic areas, they can still pose a risk.

Mud Nests

Mud dauber nests are very different from other wasp nests and are easy to identify.

They appear as narrow tubes or clumps made of dried mud, often attached to walls, ceilings, or corners of structures. These nests may be singular or clustered together over time.

Mud daubers are solitary and not aggressive, making them one of the lower-risk wasps to encounter. However, their nests can become unsightly and may attract repeat activity if not removed.

Wasp Nests Inside Walls or Landscaping

Some wasps, particularly yellow jackets and hornets, build nests inside wall voids, attics, or other structural spaces.

These nests are not visible from the outside, but signs may include wasps entering and exiting small openings in siding, vents, or around windows and doors. You may also hear faint buzzing inside the walls.

In addition to underground burrows, some wasps build nests at or just above ground level in landscaping, woodpiles, or dense vegetation.

Never Remove A Wasp Nest Yourself

Wasp nest removal should be done by a pest control professional. Removing it yourself can increase the risk of stings, especially with larger or hidden nests. Without proper protection and treatment, the problem can quickly get out of hand.

So what should you do if you find a wasp's nest? First, keep your distance and stay calm and quiet to avoid disturbing the area. Keep children and pets away.
