If you want to use natural garden pest control to keep pests from your garden this season, you want to invite lots of birds to your yard. You can’t make the birds stay but you can do things to encourage them to stick around your area.
Make your garden and property a place that birds want to be and you can benefit from birds eating the pesky critters systematically eating away at your garden!
Birds have great eyesight and the slightest move of a caterpillar or beetle can call the bird from its nest for an impromptu feeding.
Try these tips to make birds feel wanted and welcome at your house.
Fresh Water Sources
Birds need water to live just like any other living creature. Make sure there is adequate and fresh water for the birds to bathe in and drink from.
Especially in drier areas, having water in and around your garden is a big lure for birds in the area.
If you don’t have a pond like some people, you can set up a few bird baths. The birds will prefer to get up off the ground to enjoy their water. But be sure to change the water regularly as stagnant water will attract dangerous mosquitoes and provide a place for mosquito larvae to hatch.
Off-season Food
When the garden is in full swing there is an abundance of food for the birds that hang out around your property.
When the plants start to die off and hibernate, you want to be sure there is something for the birds to eat so that when the plants do come back, birds are already there waiting.
You can do this by spreading out some seeds to attract the birds. As the spring comes back you can start pulling back on the seeds which will push the birds to start eating annoying bugs and insects instead.
Birdhouses
Making some inexpensive nesting boxes can bring in a wide variety of birds to the area.
If birds have somewhere they feel safe and can take some time to rest, this will keep them close by.
Some of these boxes can also attract some other types of birds that will eat field mice and gophers.
Bug and Insect Bird Food
The birds will eat the bugs and insects that are eating all of your prized plants. They are probably the best garden pest control agents around.
But they will probably need to have more to eat than just that.
If you plant a few bushes that have berries, that can help supplement the food that the birds need.
