Winter is not far away and with it comes a task list that most homeowners attempt to tackle before the season is over. These lists usually include a whole lot of shopping, a great deal of eating and the more enjoyable gift giving.
One list that should take precedence over others is a rodent prevention checklist – the rodent proofing of your home. Winter is the most popular time of year for rodents to invade your home; seeking shelter, warmth, and food.

Be Proactive!
Most homeowners do not deal with rodents until they are already inside of the home, setting traps trying to catch them and cleaning up their feces.
The best way to attack the rodents is to be proactive and stop them before they ever reach the inside of your home. Seeing a rodent inside of your home can cause severe panic in some and complete disgust in others.
Regardless, it is never something that any homeowner is happy about. Not only are rodents annoying and cause damage to your home, but they also carry dangerous diseases and harmful bacteria that can easily be spread around your home.
Rodent Prevention Checklist
1. Inspect Home Exterior
Homeowners should take the time to thoroughly inspect the exterior of their home, looking for any access points that a rodent could squeeze through to gain entry into the home.
2. Seal Up Cracks and Crevices
You should seal up any cracks or crevices that are discovered with silicone caulk. Remember that mice can fit through a hole that is the size of a dime so do not overlook smaller holes thinking there is no way that a rodent could fit through.
Once inside, rodents will begin to multiply and grow even larger, given a reliable food and water source, which your home readily provides.
3. Secure Your Home
Your home is a place of warmth and retreat from cold weather which makes it an immediate target for rodents. Mice, rats, and squirrels are all common rodents that are found living in homes during the winter.
Make sure you replace your weather stripping and repair loose mortar around the basement’s foundation and windows. Tightly securing your home will help reduce the chances of a rodent infestation this winter.
